10. Categorical perception experiments

10.1 Demonstration of a continuum going from bad to bat

Instructions for listening to Recordings 10.2 and 10.3
Recordings 10.2 and 10.3 each have nine items, each of which might be either bad or bat. Write down whichever of the two words you think it is. Some of the words may sound like neither bad nor bat, in which case you should just guess which you think it is most like. The words are 1.5 seconds apart, so you won't have much time to make up your mind. It's your quick guesses that matter.

10.2 A randomly ordered set of words in the bad–bat continuum

10.3 Another randomly ordered set of words in the bad — bat continuum

Answer: the order in Recording 10.2

Answer: the order in Recording 10.3

Instructions for listening to Recordings 10.4 and 10.5

Recordings 10.4 and 10.5 each have ten pairs of words. Half of each of these recordings consists of the same word repeated, the other half are two slightly different versions. Your task is to say whether the pair is the same word repeated or two different versions of the word. Write “s” if they are the same, or “d” if they sound different.

10.4 A set of pairs of adjacent words in the bad — bat continuum

10.5 Another set of pairs of adjacent words in the bad — bat continuum

Answer: the words in Recording 10.4

Answer: the words in Recording 10.5

Recordings 10.6 is an example of an imperfect continuum (see text).

10.6 A continuum going from slash to splash

10. Perception of Temporal Order

10.7 Click on the sentence below to hear it:

They thought it was Jane who could be brave and in the team.

When you hear this sentence again there will be an "s" from another sentence superimposed on it. Your task is to say on which word or between which words this superimposed speech sound occurs.

Click on the sentence below to hear it with the superimposed "s".

There was once a young rat named Arthur, who could never take the trouble to make up his mind.

Now listen to this sentence again with the word dot superimposed on it. Your task is to say on which word or between which words this superimposed word occurs.

Click on the sentence below to hear it with the superimposed word dot.
Listen to this sentence only once before saying where the superimposed word occurs.

There was once a young rat named Arthur, who could never take the trouble to make up his mind..

Answer:

The words before dot

The word dot and the words after it

10.8 Click on the sentence below to hear it:

When you hear this sentence again there will be an "s" from another sentence superimposed on it. Your task is to say on which word or between which words this superimposed speech sound occurs.

Click on the sentence below to hear it with the superimposed "s".

Listen to this sentence only once before saying where the "s" occurs.

Answer

10.9 Detecting the order of non-speech sounds

(a) Simple

Click on each of the two sounds below to hear them.

Sound(1)

Sound(2)

Now listen to two complex sounds, each containing both of these sounds. Your task is to say whether Sound (1) comes at the beginning or the end of Test 1 & Test2.
You may listen to each Test twice.

Test 1

Answer

Test 2

Answer

In this part of the test you will hear pairs of sounds. Your task is to decide whether the members of the pair are the same or different. If you don't know just guess. You may be doing better than you expect.

10.9 Detecting the order of non-speech sounds

(b) Complex

In this experiment the pairs of sounds you heard in previous experiment come in the middle of the sound of a telephone dialing.

Listen to these telephone noises by themselves.

In the five sets of sounds below these telephone noises are always present. You must disregard them, and consider only the sounds that are the same as those you heard in the previous experiments. Superimposed on each setof telephone noises there is a pair of sounds of the type thatyou heard previously. Your task is to say whether the membersof the pairs are the same or different. If you don't know whether the members of the pair are the same or different, just guess. [Hint:Most people guess.]

Remember. Just listen for the pairs of sounds that were in the previous experiment
